0200 2 August 1943. Following the unsuccessful action at midnight, those PT boats that still had torpedoes remained on station in hopes of catching the Tokyo Express on the return trip. The night was pitch black and PT 109 was surprised by the Amagiri bearing down at high speed. The failure of the PTs on this night led to a complete reevaluation of thier tactical use.
