0030 August 18, 1943. The Japanese were moving to shore up their forces on Vella Lavella. Two companies of troops were loaded on 13 Diahatsu Landing Craft and sent with and escort from Buin. Spotted and attacked by aircraft, the escort had scattered. Rear Adm Ijuin was well aware of the ambush at Vella Gulf less than two weeks before and was cautious in his approach. The Americans sent a force to intercept the convoy and prevent it from making landfall on Vella Lavella at Horaniu.
