2230 October 6, 1943. The Japanese were withdrawing from the Central Solomons and needed to recue 589 soldiers and sailors stranded at Vella La Vella. Early on the 6th, Rear Admiral Ijuin planned to slip into Marquana Bay with destroyers, subchasers and landing craft. An additional destroyer force would screen the operation. Duly picked up by aircraft, two USN Destroyer Divisions were sent to intercept. Making contact, Captain F Walker decided to charge in and disrupt the operation rather than wait for his full force to arrive. In the ensuing melee, he lost one of his ships and saw the other two severaly damaged. The Japanese lost one destoyer and in the end were able to slip into the anchorage and remove their force.
