May 8, 1942. The Japanese had decided that the capture of Port Moresby on the isle of New Guinea was of such importance that they detached the 5th Carrier Division to support the invasion, despite the
impending operations at Midway. The United States had two carriers of their own in the Coral Sea, and the stage was set for the first Carrier Battle in history. The United States would lose the Lexington, but the Shokaku would take serious damage, and the Zuikaku's airgroup would suffer heavy losses, keeping both out of the Battle of Midway. The Japanese invasion of Port Moresby would be called off, giving victory to the United States.
