October 26, 1942. The fourth major carrier battle of 1942 was brought about by another Japanese attempt to reinforce their garrison on Guadalcanal. Tactically, this battle would end in a Japanese victory, as the Hornet would be sunk and the Enterprise heavily damage. However, the US hold on Guadalcanal would not be loosened in the least, so it would prove to be a strategic victory for the United States.
