Single Battle - The Battle of Maloyaroslavets (48 turns, Medium) - October 24, 1812 - With the Tsar showing no signs of coming to a peace agreement, and after the defeat at Tarutino, Napoleon had reached the decision to pull back. Wishing to avoid spending the winter in the exposed position at Moscow he decided to retreat towards Smolensk via the Medyn road. This road was little used on the advance towards Moscow, and would better serve the forage needs of the French army. Withdrawing over the invasion route would mean passing back over land that had been devastated by the ravages of the year's earlier campaigning. Intersecting Napoleon's desired route was the critical town of Maloyaroslavets and the bridge that crossed the Lusha River there. For the French it was vital to secure this intersection to allow them to follow their preferred path. Leading the French advance was Napoleon's last fresh regular corps, Eugene's Italians. This scenario presents the forces that actually were involved in the combat at Maloyaroslavets and the fight that resulted in Napoleon's decision to withdraw over their previous route and into ultimate doom.
