Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Pechory (or Petschora) (Historical)
After the defeat at Narva, Tsar Peter I gathered his forces near the Swedish borders at Pskov and Gdov in order to start a new offensive into Swedish Livonia. Pre-empting this offensive, Charles XII ordered Magnus Stenbock and Jacob Spens to cross the Russian border and destroy the Russian forces at Izborsk and Pechory.
The heavily fortified Pechory Monastery was being used by the Russians as a base for conducting raids into Swedish territory. Spens arrived near Pechory in late February and hoped to meet the Russian army in the open. Rather unwisely, the Russian commander left the fortress and met the Swedes some 15km outside the town of Pechory.
Historically, the Swedes forced the Russians back to Pechory and, unsuccessfully, attempted to storm the Monastery. Spens abandoned the attempts and satisfied himself by burning the nearby villages before returning to the Swedish border. This scenario covers the first battle near Pechory.
