Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Erastfer (What-if)
In the pretext of the Great Northern War, August the Strong of Saxe-Poland-Lithuania and Tsar Peter the Great of Russia had agreed to conquer and partition Sweden's Baltic dominions in the Treaty of Preobrazhenskoye in 1699. During the first year of the war, King Charles XII of Sweden was able to defeat the Russian army at Narva in 1700, and then followed up this victory by pursuing August the Strong to Saxony. Once the main Swedish army had left the Baltics, the Russian forces were able to regroup, and started their first attempts of conquering the Baltic countries of Livonia and Estonia. Left behind to defend this area was the rather small Swedish force under the command of Major General Wolmar Anton von Schlippenbach of about 5000 regulars and 3000 militia.
In December 1701 Russian general Boris Sheremetev had got reinforcements and gathered his troops for an assault on the Swedish defenders, who had gone into winter camp at the small town of Erastfer. Late that month Sheremetev left Pskov with a large force of about 18838 men and 20 cannons. Schlippenbach's force in and around Erastfer consisted of about 3,470 men, but at least 1,000 men were absent from the ranks for various reasons on the day of the battle. Through his scouts Schlippenbach learned that a large Russian force was closing in on his camp at Erastfer and sent his men eastward to engage the enemy. The two forces met at the tiny village of Magari.
This variant of the scenario has all of Schlippenbach's Corps present. It will take some time for the large Russian Army to deploy, so the Swedish defender must use the time wisely.
