033.The Battle of Holowczyn (What if) - WDS The Great Northern War

Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Holowczyn (or Golovin) (What If)

During Charles XII's march on Moscow, the Swedish army reached the rain-flooded river Vabitch. On the other side of the river, the road ahead was blocked by a larger, entrenched, Russian force. Careful reconnaissance, identified a swampy area which effectively separated the Russian lines. The Russians had clearly believed this area to be impassable and made no real effort to defend it.

Charles XII identified a route through the swampy area which would allow Swedish forces to bypass the Russian defenses and attack their weaker flank and rear. Charles XII brought artillery forward very early in the morning which began to bombard the Russians as the Swedes advanced through the swamp.

This battle assumes the Russian had moved reserves to the North of their positions and that the Swedes used all of their forces to launch two assaults across the Vabitch.
