Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Gorki (A hypothetical battle from the Russian campaign)
Following their defeat at Holowczyn, the Russians withdrew towards Smolensk. Enraged at the defeat and gifting the Swedes with an open road to Moscow, Peter I has ordered the Russian army stand, fight and delay the Swedes to allow the artillery to escape and for reinforcements to be gathered. The Russians chose to stand at Gorki, a good defensible position, and one which blocked the route to Smolensk. They arrived on the 13th July and began entrenching.
Charles XII had a clear road to Moscow following Holowczyn but was having supply issues and had camped near Gorki awaiting the overdue planned re-supply. Historically, the battle of Gorki did not happen but it could have been a decisive battle of the campaign.
This scenario assumes the Swedes are launching a frontal attack on the Russian positions the day after the Russians arrive in Gorki and before they can build substantial defenses. The Swedes have abandoned their artillery in favor of a rapid advance.
