Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Lesnaya (Historical)
In early April 1708, General Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt was tasked with obtaining a large quantity of supplies for the Swedish main army - enough for a three-week campaign. Lewenhaupt gathered as many soldiers as possible from Livonia, to escort the supply train and reinforce the King's main army. The column was huge and estimated to have over 4500 carts, several herds of cattle and associated servants etc. Delays meant that Lewenhaupt was a month behind schedule before setting off with movement hampered by heavy rains, mud and floods.
On September 21st, Lewenhaupt crossed the Dnieper River and headed south to Propoisk. This huge column had been observed by the Russians and Tsar Peter gathered troops and pursued the Swedes. On the 28th of September, Lewenhaupt arrived in the small village of Lesnaya, he was within a day's march of Propoisk so decided to set up camp before continuing the march. Hearing reports of Russians near Propoisk he detached units to clear the road.
Seeing the Swedes stop at Lesnaya, the normally cautious Tsar decided to attack the next day. On the 29th of September, the Russians advanced in two columns towards the Swedes. Realizing the Russians were attacking, Lewenhaupt urgently re-called the units heading towards Propoisk and prepared for battle.
