Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Baturyn (Historical)
Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa decided to pursue alliance with Swedish king Charles XII of Sweden rather than maintain an uneasy alliance with Peter I of Russia. Charles XII seemed unstoppable and Mazepa gambled that an alliance with Sweden would give him more control in Ukraine.
In 1707, Charles invaded Russia. Tsar Peter I engaged in scorched-earth warfare, retreating, while burning everything left behind. This tactic, combined with one of the most severe winters in European history sapped the strength of the invading Swedish force. King Charles XII decided to rest, feed, and re-equip his army and turned south to Ukraine. The capital of Ukraine at the time was Baturyn.
As soon as Peter I heard of this alliance, Mazepa was declared a traitor and sent an army under Menshikov to take the Cossack capital city of Baturyn. Menshikov tried to persuade the defenders to surrender which failed, He then attempted an assault but was repulsed. Shortly afterwards the garrison would, eventually, be betrayed by a traitor who let the Russians into Baturyn.
Note: This scenario covers the initial unsuccessful Russian assault on Baturyn and includes Cossack reinforcements.
Recommended Rules: [Default]
Note: Sweden - AI, Northern Alliance - Human, or Head-to-Head.
