Date: January 7, 1709 - Size: Small - Location: Veprik, Ukraine
Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Veprik (Historical)
The winter of 1708 and 1709 was harsh even by Ukrainian standards. To add to the misery, the Swedish army was being regularly harassed by Russian forces and had taken part in several grinding minor actions - destroying Russian garrisons and gathering supplies. Close to the Swedish positions was Veprik, which was a Russian garrison commanded by a Col George Fermor - a Scottish Officer.
Charles XII decided to storm Veprik as the garrison posed a threat to Swedish supply lines and it was believed, a victory would be good for morale. The Swedish plan was to bombard and breach the defenses, then launch a coordinated assault by three columns. The attackers would use ladders to scale the icy defenses. However, the Russian defenders had been busy enhancing the defenses - primarily by pouring water on the ramparts and blocking the gates turning them into hardened sheets of ice.
Historically, the three columns failed to coordinate their attacks allowing the Russians to fend off each attack. The Swedes failed to take Veprik by storm, the garrison surrendering the next day. The end result was a Swedish victory after taking large numbers of casualties they couldn't afford to lose.
