Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Pälkäne (or Kostianvirta or Pälkäne Church) (Historical)
The Swedish army in Finland consisted of Finnish soldiers and had been severely mauled following a failed campaign under their Swedish Commander Lybeker. In 1713, Russian troops under the command of General Apraksin and Czar Peter I in the vanguard headed the Russian invasion of Finland. Helsinki and Porvoo fell early in May, and by August the Russians had advanced to Turku, with General Lybecker constantly falling back. Lybecker's poor performance led to his replacement in September by General Armfeldt.
To stop the Russian advance, Armfeldt took a strong position on an isthmus between two lakes in the parish of Pälkäne to defend Tampere. He arranged his infantry behind strong fortifications along the banks of the river Kostianvirta and held cavalry in reserve to counter any Russian flanking move. The strong Finnish position would be difficult to force with a frontal attack. So Apraksin planned to fix the Finns with a frontal assault while conducting an amphibious landing behind the Finnish position by crossing lake Mallasvesi on rafts. Fortunately for the Russians that morning there was no wind and a heavy fog shrouded their movements across the lake. When the fog began to lift, the Russians were spotted by the Finns, who prepared for battle.
