Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Pälkäne (or Kostianvirta or Pälkäne Church) (What if)
The Swedish army in Finland consisted almost entirely of Finns and had been severely mauled following a failed campaign under their Swedish Commander Lybeker. In 1713, Russian troops under the command of General Apraksin and Czar Peter I in the vanguard headed the Russian invasion of Finland. Helsinki and Porvoo fell early in May, and by August the Russians had advanced to Turku, with General Lybecker constantly falling back. Lybecker's poor performance led to his replacement in September by Finnish General Armfeldt.
To stop the Russian advance, Armfeldt took a strong position on an isthmus between two lakes in the parish of Pälkäne to defend Tampere. He arranged his infantry behind strong fortifications along the banks of the river Kostianvirta. This scenario has the Finns holding cavalry in reserve to counter any flanking moves, while the Russians have decided on a direct assault across the Kostianvirta river using improvised rafts. (Note: Russian troops can cross the river)
Recommended Rules: [Default]
Note: Sweden - AI, Northern Alliance - Human, or Head-to-Head.
