The attempt form the army of the Holy League to relieve the French siege of the city of Ravenna generated one of the most iconic battles of the early Italian wars.
Gaston de Foix, Duc de Nemours, was encamped on the south side of the city of Ravenna, between the rivers Montone and Ronco. Raymundo de Cardona, the commander of the Spanish-Papal army, approaching Ravenna from the direction of Forlì, marched along the right bank of the river Ronco and halted north of Molinaccio, around three and half kilometers from the city walls; here the Holy Leaugue army built an entrenched camp. De Foix, facing severe supply problems, had to quickly take a decision: leave the siege or compel the Spanish-Papal army to fight. After an agreement with the other French-Ferrarese Captains, the army started to cross the Ronco on the morning of April, 11 1512.
