Scenario Briefing: Battle of Dessau Bridge - While the Imperialist strategy for 1626 was to contain the conflict and keep it away from friendly territory, Christian of Denmark's plan was to spread the fighting as widely as possible. After plundering the Altmark, Christian's ally Mansfeld was determined to secure the bridge at Dessau, the key crossing point between Magdeburg and Saxony. However, anticipating this move, the Imperialist general Wallenstein had secured and fortified both banks with a force of 4 infantry companies under the capable Colonel Aldringer. On 12th April, Mansfeld had unsuccessfully attempted to capture the bridge. Then, instead of abandoning the enterprise, Mansfeld decided to dig in, bring up reinforcements and guns to reduce the position. However, Imperialist reinforcements were also arriving, including Wallenstein himself with a strong force of cavalry on 24th April. Clearly outnumbered, Mansfeld ought to have retreated, but instead he ordered an attack. He had even failed to post sentries to prevent the Imperialists from quietly moving troops into the woods on his left flank!
