Date: 7 August 1631 - Size: Medium - Location: Werben, West of Havelberg, Margraviate of Brandenburg, now Saxony-Anhalt
Scenario Briefing: Werben - King Gustavus of Sweden, hoping to concentrate his full field army of 30,000 men and then fight the Catholic League general Tilly before he could be joined by Furstenberg, decided to fortify a strong defensive position at Werben until his entire army was assembled. After a minor cavalry action at Burgstall on 27th July, Tilly's army reached Werben on 5th August. Since the two armies were approximately the same size, Tilly hoped to draw Gustavus out of his defenses and fight an open battle. However, Gustavus, who was expecting 10,000 reinforcements, was reluctant to fight a pitched battle on even terms. Historically, after some initial skirmishing, Gustavus launched a brisk sortie, but then fell back to his strong defensive position. Tilly, realizing that the enemy intended to avoid open battle, marched off on 8th August before the enemy reinforcements could arrive.
Recommended Rules: Default
Note: This scenario can be played as either side or Head-to-Head, but is probably best played as a Catholic League (Imperialist) player against a Swedish (Anti-Imperialist) A/I.
