Scenario Briefing: 1st Battle of Breitenfeld: Large Tercio variant - This scenario has a modified pdt with an increased stacking limit to allow for the large, cumbersome, Catholic infantry units. After joining forces with the Elector of Saxony, the Swedish king Gustavus felt the time was right to avenge the Sack of Magdeburg and face Tilly's army in open battle. Although Tilly had planned to wait for reinforcement so that his forces would be about equal to the combined enemy armies, his impetuous subordinate Pappenheim claimed - falsely - that his reconnaissance force was too close to the enemy to safely withdraw and thereby obliged Tilly to march to his assistance. However, when Tilly reached Pappenheim, he discovered that the enemy was still some distance away on the other side of the marshy Lober stream. This gave Tilly plenty of time to deploy his army for a defensive battle, but insufficient for saving his heavy guns and baggage if he'd attempted to retreat without sacrificing a rearguard.
Tilly deployed his infantry and most of his guns in the center, with a separate battery on Gallows hill. Pappenheim commanded the cavalry on the left flank and Furstenberg the right flank cavalry facing the inexperienced Saxons. There was also a cavalry reserve behind the infantry. After crossing the Lober, the Swedish army deployed separately from the Saxons, with musketeers supporting the flanking cavalry and battalion guns providing additional firepower to the small, flexible infantry "skvadrons", which would rely more on firepower and mobility than melee shock tactics.
Recommended Rules: Default
Note: Suitable for playing either side against the A/I and also for Head-to-Head.
