Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Oldendorf - Although the death of Gustavus had been disastrous for the Anti-Imperialist cause, it did at least mean that the Swedish king would no longer be attempting to intervene remotely in the Westphalian theatre of war. Also, with the departure of Baner and Baudissin, Duke Georg of Brunswick-Luneburg was able to assume overall command in Westphalia. Despite this, the Anti-Imperialist forces remained three distinct corps - Hesse-Cassel, Luneburg and Sweden, although most of the "Swedish" infantry at Oldendorf were actually Scottish and English troops. The Imperialist-Catholic army at Oldendorf had a number of serious weaknesses which would result in a quick and decisive defeat. Despite having adopted Wallenstein's military reforms that replaced the traditional tercio deep formations, the infantry were mostly garrison troops and had few pikemen, increasing firepower yet making the units vulnerable in melee. However, the worst problem was that the leaders were poor quality, disagreed on the flawed battle plan devised by Merode, and failed to support each other once the battle got underway.

Note: Suitable for playing either side against the A/I and also for Head-to-Head.
