Scenario Briefing: 1st Action at Rheinfelden - Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar, the only senior Anti-Imperialist commander to survive the decisive defeat of Nordlingen, had a difficult task of rebuilding the shattered army, especially since the Swedes withdrew north to defend their Baltic possessions and many German Anti-Imperialists subsequently either deserted or even switched sides! Bernhard was obliged to enter French service against the Hapsburgs, although he continued to attempt to assert his "independence", since his ultimate goal was to establish his own principality. In early February 1638, Bernhard left his winter quarters to seize a number of minor towns before besieging Rheinfelden, a key city on the Upper Rhine. An Imperialist relief army under Werth was quickly assembled and force-marched to relieve Rheinfelden before it fell. Bernhard rashly decided to cross the river with only a portion of his army and face the larger relief army while maintaining the siege. Despite some initial success, weight of numbers forced Bernhard to retreat and abandon the siege. The victorious Imperialists were too tired after their forced march to pursue the defeated enemy, allowing Bernhard to regroup and launch a counter-attack a few days later.
