Date: 17th October 1638 - Size: Small / Medium - Location: Vlotho, South of Minden
Scenario Briefing: The Action at Vlotho longer variant - Karl Ludwig, nephew of the English King Charles I, received English financial support to raise a small army to reclaim his father's Palatinate Electorate. Karl Ludwig was then persuaded by the Swedish general Baner - who loaned him 1,000 men under Lt.Gen. King - to besiege Lemgo. However, the approach of a larger Imperial army under Hatzfeld forced the Palatinate army to abandon the siege and fall back towards Minden. Hatzfeld's more mobile force managed to reach Vlotho first and cut off their line of retreat. The experienced General King, who had commanded the Swedish left-wing at Wittstock, instructed that the Palatinate cavalry should adopt a defensive position on the Eiberg while he went back to hurry on the infantry and guns. However, the cavalry commander, Königsmarck, decided to press on and attack the Imperialist cavalry in a narrow defile. Hatzfeld ordered a counter-charge and sent 800 cavalry to outflank the enemy right. The Anti-Imperialist cavalry under Loe and Ferentz were quick to break and Rupert's regiment, although charging bravely with initial success, was promptly surrounded and overwhelmed by weight of numbers. Historically, the Palatinate infantry and guns would arrive too late to participate in the fighting, but in this variant scenario they have already arrived.
