Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Rocroi: "What if"- Despite the defeat at Honnecourt and death of Cardinal Richelieu the previous year, the French government - now controlled by Cardinal Mazarin - was determined to continue the war against Spain. When a Spanish army under de Melo laid siege to the fortified border town of Rocroi, a French army under the Duc d'Enghien, later known as the Great Conde, marched to relieve Rocroi. While the Spanish relied on their veteran infantry tercios, the French planned to secure victory with their cavalry. The subsequent hard-fought French victory secured the reputation of the French general and shattered the myth of Spanish invincibility.
Recommended Rules: Default
Note: Suitable for playing either side or for Head-to-Head.
Note: This variant scenario assumes that the Spanish ambush force in the woods on the French right flank had not been detected in advance and dealt with by the French.
