Date: 3rd August 1644 - Size: Medium - Location: Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg
Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Freiburg: Day 1: The French Assaults - Following the ambush and crushing of the pro-French Weimar army in November 1643, the Bavarian general Mercy conducted offensive operations in 1644 against French strongholds in Swabia. Turenne's outnumbered French army was unable to prevent the capture of Freiburg on 29th July, but reinforced by a fresh French army under Conde, it was now the Bavarian's turn to be outnumbered and forced onto the defensive at Freiburg. Although Turenne felt that the Bavarian defensive works were too strong and that it would be better to threaten the enemy's lines of communication instead, the recklessly aggressive Conde (at this date still known as d'Enghien, since his father was still alive), was determined on a direct frontal assault. Since Conde was the victor of Rocroi, Cardinal Mazarin had made him overall commander, so Turenne was over-ruled. The resulting assault would result in heavy French casualties.
Recommended Rules: Default - with the following alterations: Column Movement Restriction optional rule ON to represent the dense woods.
Note: Best played as the French (Anti-Imperialist) side against the Bavarian Catholic League (Imperialist) A/I.
Note: Since the French attack was planned for 5pm, Conde's infantry assault force is initially fixed. Historically, Turenne's attack was not held back, as instructed by Conde, and started almost an hour earlier. The Bavarian dragoons are dismounted to represent the shortage of horses (1600) in the Bavarian army at this time.
