Date: 20th August 1648 - Size: Medium - Location: Lens, Pas de Calais, Northern France
Scenario Briefing: The Battle of Lens - The decisive French victory at Rocroi five years earlier had enabled the consequent capture or recapture of dozens of towns. However, by 1648, Leopold Wilhelm, the new Spanish governor of the Spanish Netherlands, was able to launch a fresh counter-offensive and recaptured the important border town of Lens. Conde's French relief army was too late to prevent the fall of Lens and, on discovering that the larger Spanish army was in a strong defensive position, the French prepared to retreat. However, the Spanish left wing attacked and routed the French right wing cavalry, which was acting as a rearguard and Conde himself was nearly captured or wounded. The elite Picardy infantry regiment managed to halt the Spanish advance and gave time for the French cavalry to rally. After some initial hesitation, the main Spanish army left its defensive position and went over to the offensive. Meanwhile, the French formed up for battle. Initially, the Spanish infantry were winning the battle, but the superior French cavalry eventually secured victory
Recommended Rules: Default
Note: Suitable for playing either side against the A/I and also for Head-to-Head play.
