Scenario Briefing: Historical - The first and most famous of Saxe's three great battlefield victories, the fighting at Fontenoy was triggered by the French siege operations against Tournai.

The Pragmatic Army, its right wing composed of British, Hanoverian, and Austrian troops and its left wing of Dutch, marched to relieve the siege under the command of the Duke of Cumberland. Saxe had employed field fortifications to create a defensive position partially masked by woods and anchored on the fortified village of Fontenoy. Pragmatic attacks on either flank were unsuccessful, but in the center the British and Hanoverian infantry fought its way into the heart of the French position where it withstood a series of counterattacks before being finally driven from the field. Tournai fell shortly afterwards, and Saxe began a swift campaign of exploitation that overran much of the Austrian Netherlands.

This scenario begins with the Dutch in position and the Anglo-Hanoverian infantry deploying behind its screening cavalry.
