Scenario Briefing: Historical - The last of Saxe's trio of battlefield victories again pitched him against the Duke of Cumberland, but this time with their Fontenoy roles reversed and the French - who were seeking to besiege Maestricht - on the attack. Failing to learn the lessons of his defeat two years previously, Cumberland failed to fortify the villages ahead of his line, initially ordering them evacuated and then changing his mind at the last minute when the French were already on the attack. Lauffeld village changed hands multiple times before falling to the French in the early afternoon, whereupon Cumberland ordered a withdrawal. This was successfully covered by a series of charged by the Pragmatic Army's left-wing cavalry under Ligonier, which checked further French progress but at the cost of heavy casualties and Ligonier himself taken prisoner. Victory allowed the French to go on and capture Bergen-op-Zoom later in the year and Maestricht itself in 1748, completing their conquest of the Low Countries.

Note that de Saxe had left a sizeable detachment at Tongres to cover his potential line of retreat - these troops are present on the map, but remain fixed.
