Scenario Briefing: Variant - With the main Franco-Spanish campaign against Piedmont stalled and the wider war descending into stalemate, French commander the Duc de Belleisle sought to revitalize the situation with a new offensive in the northern Alpine passes. A strong French army, led by the Chevalier de Belleisle, younger brother of the Duc, faced limited Austro-Piedmontese forces but extremely difficult terrain. Attempting to attack the Piedmontese entrenched camp at the Colle dell'Assietta, the French were decisively repulsed with the Chevalier de Belleisle amongst the dead. The Marquis de Montcalm, wounded commanding a French brigade, would remember the defensive tactics that had thwarted French ambitions, and use them to his advantage a decade later at Fort Carillon.

In this variant scenario, the Piedmontese forces in the area are all concentrated around the Assietta position, bringing in an additional brigade of lower-quality troops that were historically assigned to garrison duties elsewhere. The possibility also exists of the French detachment of d'Escars making an appearance from the flanks.

Note: This battle was fought amongst extremely steep hills, and so movement rates going uphill have been adjusted. Further, road movement is less efficient than usual. Also, the French used "Folard Columns" in this battle, and so they have a lower penalty for attacking in column than the usual. Please see the Design Note for a discussion of Folard Columns.
