Battles of the Nive: 10 December - After light skirmishing during the British reconnaissance of the previous day, Hope unwisely ordered most of the Allied troops back to their cantonments - the 1st Division as far back as St Jean de Luz! However, the Portuguese brigades of A. Campbell and Bradford remained at Barrouillet and the Light Division at Arcangues. Meanwhile, with the river Nive dividing the Allied army, Soult planned a full scale attack on Hope's wing, despite the fact that half his troops were badly fatigued by a night march in heavy rain. NB: Clausel's failure to launch a general assault on Arcangues is represented by a high probability of French forces becoming fixed.
