Battle of the Nivelle: 10 November 1813 - Despite the apparent strength of the French defenses, Wellington apparently believed that "... I shall beat them out, and with great ease". His plan of attack involved a demonstration against the formidable French position in front of St Jean de Luz, while the main assault - by some 60,000 men would be launched against the center of the French line, with the intention of breaking through as far as Serres. Further demonstrations at other points would also be made to pin down enemy forces.
