Reille arrives at Roses 11 July 1808 - With two raw Italian battalions, a company of Swiss and a couple of guns - less than 1,600 men in total - Reille arrived at the small seaport of Roses (or Rosas in Castillian). Only some 400 Catalan miqueletes and 5 guns defended the town, but when Reille began to invest Roses, he found himself facing some 4 to 5 thousand irregular somatenes in his rear, while a British battleship also appeared and started landing marines to reinforce the garrison. These reinforcements forced the outnumbered Reille to beat a hasty retreat. The French would only return to besiege Roses in November.
