Somosierra 30 November 1808 - Despite defeats at Espinosa, Gamonal and Tudela, the stubborn Spaniards were determined to hold the passes of Somosierra and Guadarrama against Napoleon's powerful army of 130,000 men. Napoleon had sufficient troops to attack both passes but chose to concentrate on forcing the Somosierra pass. Once taken, the road to Madrid would lie open.
