Tarragona: Fort Olivio 29 May 1811 - While Suchet's preparations for the bombardment of the western side of Tarragona were still underway, he decided to launch a nocturnal assault on Fort Olivio. To divert attention, he ordered a bombardment of the lower city by the batteries at the Francoli. Despite lacking a viable breach, the risky French attack was assisted by running into a Spanish relief force outside the postern gate. In the confusion of the night fighting, the French were able to enter the fort. Elsewhere, another French force had managed to secure an foothold via the aqueduct which carried water down to the town.
