Toulouse 10 April 1814 - Toulouse, with its mediaeval walls and extensive water defenses, had been recently strengthen by the construction of additional earthworks. In particular, earthen redoubts had been hastily thrown up on Mont Rave to prevent the besiegers from establishing batteries on the high ground overlooking the city. Wellington's plan was for the Light Division and the troops under Hill and Picton to make light diversionary attacks to pin down as many French as possible. The main assault would be made by Beresford's 4th and 6th divisions against the enemy right, although this would involve a risky march across the entire French front! Perhaps Wellington hoped to lure the enemy down from their strong defensive position? Meanwhile, the Spanish general Freire would assault the Mont Rave heights, once Beresford's troops had completed their march and were ready to attack.
