The First Siege of Zaragoza: The Initial Assaults - After easily defeating raw Spanish forces at Tudela, Mallen and Alagon, the French general Lefebvre mistakenly believed he would be able to march into Zaragoza virtually unopposed. Instead, the French regulars would be confronted by vicious street fighting against a largely civilian force. Lacking siege guns, Lefebvre launched assaults against the St Engracia, Portillo and Carmen gates. Despite forcing the gates, the French were driven out with heavy losses and were obliged to establish regular siege works.
