10 August, 1944: While evacuating St. Nazaire for Germany via the English channel, Kptlt Valentiner was running on the surface, clearing the air from a faulty schnorkel when he was spotted by HMS Starling, flagship of Support Group 2. A brief gun battle ensured, but Valentiner decided discretion was the better part of valor and made an attempt to submerge and escape. Eventually U-385 was forced to surface where she was detected by a Sunderland of Australian Squadron 461. U-385 would not escape.
