30 January, 1940: Acting on B-dienst information U-55 intercepted the small Convoy OA-80G, attacked,and sank two ships. Attempting to slip away in the heavy fog, she was pursued by aggressively by one of the escorts. Two destroyers and a Sunderland of Coastal Command responded to pleas for aid. Damaged by depth charges, U-55 opted to surface and attempt to escape. The Sunderland bombed and strafed U-55, forcing her to scuttle. It was the first kill credited (at least partially) to the RAF.
