16 September, 1939: U-31 had reported contact with an Outbound Convoy. Doenitz ordered all boats in the Western Approaches to converge. Overnight Kptlt Habekost maneuvered ahead of the convoy and placed himself in a favorable firing position. Habekost claimed sinking two ships. In reality, it was only one, an independent ship who happened to cross the path of the convoy at that unfortunate moment. However, it was the first time a ship had been sunk during an attack on a convoy.
