9 May, 1941: Kerneval directed 6 boats towards OB-318 after U-94's initial attack. U-110 and U-201 found it first. Assuming the escorts had left the convoy, the skippers opted to make a daylight submerged attack. Lemp in U-110 was senior to Schnee in U-201, and so he would make the initial attack with Schnee following up 30 minutes later. Unfortunately for Lemp, the convoy was still closely escorted and they would defend it vigorously. After a brief, savage depth charging, U-110 was forced to the surface to scuttle. A boarding party from Bulldog made it on board, stopped the flooding and secured the boat to tow it to Iceland. In addition, they captured an Enigma machine, moving the Allied decoding efforts ahead by leaps and bounds. U-110 would not make it to port however, eventually sinking on May 10.
