03 January, 1943: U-514, inbound to Trinidad came across a small convoy comprised of 9 tankers. Kptlt Auffermann duly reported the contact to BdU. In turn, Doenitz instructed him to shadow "without fail" as well as authorizing an attack on the juicy targets. Auffermann made an attack claiming a 17,000 ton whale factory ship. In reality he had only severely damaged the much smaller British Vigilance. (The British Vigiliance would be abandoned, the hulk drifting for weeks before being put under by U-105). Problematic diesels and a faulty radio made shadowing and bringing in more boats difficult. Doenitz would turn the group Delfin to another convoy GUF-3.
