Monte Cassino, 90km SE of Rome, Italy: [Best played as Axis] To the surprise of all, Heidrich's paratroopers of the 1st Parachute Division survived the massive carpet bombing of Cassino and halted the slow advance by the New Zealanders. In the following days, Operation Dickens saw a massive struggle for two key features: the southern end of Cassino town, held tenaciously by Heidrich's paratroopers, and the feature known as Hangman's Hill held by Gurkhas. The former was the key to Route 6 and the latter to the defense of Monte Cassino. If the Germans could hold the southern end of the town and push the Gurkhas off Hangman's Hill then they would have yet another resounding victory in the defense of Monte Cassino.
