Bir Hacheim, 70km SW of Tobruk, Libya: [Best played as Axis] Now in command of the newly designated Panzer Armee Afrika, Rommel was finally his own master and by 25 May was once again within striking distance of Tobruk. In front of the Axis divisions the British 8th Army lay entrenched behind the Gazala Line, a series of fortified strongholds and minefields stretching from the coast to Bir Hacheim, nearly 100km into the African desert. During the night of 26 May, Rommel launched a diversionary attack against the British line, while the Afrika Korps swung around Bir Hacheim to strike towards Tobruk. The success of Rommel's plan depended on the elimination of the Bir Hacheim fortified box, held by the 1st Free French Brigade and positioned across the Afrika Korps supply lines. This task was given to the Trieste Motorized and Ariete Armored Divisions. But on the morning of the 27th, the Trieste got lost and bogged down in the soft sand leaving Ariete's tanks and infantry to face the hell of Bir Hacheim alone!
