Herrlisheim - The Matrix Games version of West Front

December 1944 was a tough time for the soldiers of Lt. Gen. Jacob L. Devers Sixth Army Group. They were not only being hindered by the Germans but also by heavy fog and snow which limited air support. While the worlds attention was riveted on the bitter strugle for the Ardennes, the Germans launched an unexpectedly strong counteroffensive against Devers forces on the southern flank of the Allied line in Alsace. The series of ferocious attacks, which started on December 31, 1944, collectively came to be known by the Germans as Operation Nordwind ("North Wind"). The Germans objective was to reach the town of Herrlisheim and build up enough mass to punch through to their forces fighting in Hatten and Rittershoffen thereby pinching off the American VI Corps. salient.
