Background: August 11, 2008. Zemo-Nikozi, Georgia/South Ossetia.
Located approximately 10 miles south-west from Tskhinvali in South Ossetia, the small village of Zemo-Nikozi was repeatedly attacked during the August conflict. Initially it was the target of sparodic South Ossetian mortar fire, but as the Russians later pushed south it was the location of stubborn Georgian resistance. On the morning of August 11, Chechen special forces and regular russian motorized troops assaulted the village with support from artillery and lightly armored vehicles. The attackers were kept at bay for a short time, but eventually the Georgian resistance was swept aside.
From the morning of August 12 onward, the Georgian army began to retreat toward Gori, a retreat which soon grew into a panicked flight from Gori, almost all the way to Tbilisi.
