Most challenging to play: Chechens [Japanese] against Russians [Allied]. Conditions: Normal. Size: Medium-Large.
Background: January 17, 1995. Grozny, Chechnya.
The battle of Grozny became a systematic offensive similar to the Soviet Army’s conquering of cities during the Second World War. Sector by sector of the city was taken after initial artillery and air bombardment and infantry battles from house to house.
Attacks by Russian shock units and assault detachments to dislodge Dudayev’s fighters from a number of buildings in the city center continued through mid-January with attempts by paratroopers, motorized infantry units, and marines to get inside the Presidential Palace and other key government buildings. Chechen resistance was tough and took a high toll on the Russians. Despite mounting casualties, the Russians pressed towards the Presidential Palace knowing the soldier who raised their nation's flag above the building would become a Hero of the Russian Federation.
