8 September, 1914
[Lyck, East Prussia]:[H2H][HIS][CSL]: By the 8th of September,
the German 8.Armee was on a collision course for another climactic
battle in East Prussia. Some 20 kilometers to the south of the
main battlefield, the strategic crossroads of Lyck was being
guarded by the partially formed Russian XXII.Army Corps that
the Northwestern Front had rushed into the front line. The Russians
intended to hold the crossroads as a link between the new 10th
Army that was still forming, and Rennenkampf's 1st Army. However,
the German 3.Reserve-Division was advancing along the periphery
of the main force attacking near the Masurian Lakes, and it intended
to seize the strategic crossroads at Lyck in order to provide
flank security to its own army, and to push on north eastward
if need be.[ALL]
