4 November, 1914
The Battle of Tanga. (Best played against a human opponent, or
as British player v German AI). The Indian Expeditionary Force
B arrived off Tanga (German East Africa) in the early hours of
Nov 2, 1914. The cruiser HMS Fox then sailed into the harbour
and demanded the total surrender of Tanga, which the Germans
declined. This took the British completely by surprise. The troops
had suffered terribly on the voyage from India, and had previously
been confined to their ships for several weeks. They were in
no fit state to enter combat. Major General Aitken had made no
effort to reconnoitre the German positions. Despite all this,
on the night 2/3 Nov, 13th Rajputs and 61st King George's Own
Pioneers landed, followed by the rest of the force over the next
24 hours. On 4th November they advanced to assault Tanga town.
Meanwhile, the Germans had managed to transfer a substantial
defensive force back from Kilimanjaro. (Many thanks to the Great
War Yahoo group for the information on this battle).
DESIGNERS NOTES; To represent the great state of disorganisation
and unreadiness of the British forces, I have handicapped the
British in a number of ways; Firstly, they have an Ammo level
of only 10%. Therefore British units will be out of supply for
most of the battle. Be very careful how you use HMS Fox's guns,
once they have fired, they will probably not be available again.
All British units start the battle fatigued and disrupted. But
due to the low number of turns, the British player will have
to start moving units into the attack as soon as possible, he
does not have the luxury of waiting until all his units are undisrupted.
Most of the Indian units in this battle generally performed terribly,
whole platoons running off at the first sign of gunfire, therefore
British units have been given very low morale levels, the worst
(13th Rajputs and 61st Pioneers) only 1! Be very careful how
you use these units, they could be eliminated by one attack!
Also, all British HQs and leaders are fixed for the whole battle,
further exacerbating the supply problems. Historically, the german
leaders Lettow-Vorbeck and Hammerstein had bicycles to help them
get around the town, so I have provided them with bicycle units
for that purpose.
Version 1.1, added 4 turns, and tripled the VH points, testing proved no chance of win for the British.
