1st April 1919 what if? This hypothetical counterfactual scenario has the US 77th (Liberty) Infantry Division launching a deliberate attack on a section of German defences laid out in depth. Only 1 infantry regiment (the 305th) is being used but it has the support of all of the division’s field artillery brigade fielding 72 guns and 12 heavy mortars plus air support. The attack is spearheaded by the US 301st Heavy Tank Battalion equipped with the brand new MK VIII Liberty Tank now being churned out in increasing numbers for all allied armies operating on the Western Front.
In the path of this attack is the III Battalion of the German 461st Infantry Regiment supported by 7 batteries of medium and heavy artillery and another 2 of field guns deployed forward in the direct fire anti-tank role.
The well dug-in German defence in depth was foreseen and expected by the attacking Americans and they have well-rehearsed infantry / tank drills to deal with it. However the defenders, having been warned by signals intelligence of the planned American attack several days in advance, have some other unpleasant surprises in store. Close up behind their lines is an Abteilung of K Wagon super heavy tanks. Monsters that weigh 120 tons and are armed with 4 77mm guns and 7 machineguns each. Also on call to take out the Allied armour are a couple of AEG G.Ivk dedicated anti-tank aircraft equipped with 20mm cannon to attack the vulnerable thinner top armour and exposed overhead tracks of Allied rhomboid tanks.
See the scenario design notes MSWord document that comes with the game for more details of the counterfactual background and the mechanisms and design choices that have been taken in making this scenario to try and better reflect the military realities of this period.
Any feedback in the Blitz forum would be greatly appreciated, please.

Based on first time played by anyone: Interesting idea using black no man's land so as to see other side's off-board artillery and create artillery duels, but the first ten turns the Germans have nothing to duel with and play is limited to clicking the next turn button. Not much fun. Better to shorten the scenario 10 turns and reflect the opening allied bombardment in the score. Too great a disparity in the amount of artillery, with allies having too much and Germans too little. Allies are also given WAY too much gas, making assaults on German entrenchments downright easy. The only reason I lost a minor, rather than a major is my opponent didn't save one for the last objective. Could be a good scenario with some tweaks, but as is, not for PBEM.
Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. --Walt Kelly
