Frejus, 25km SW of Cannes, France: [Hypothetical; Best played as Allied] As the thick morning mists began to burn away along the coast of southern France on August 15, 1944, a vast array of Allied shipping preparing to land the US Seventh Army on the quiet beaches between Cannes and Cavalaire was revealed. On the far right the leading assault regiments of the "Hard Luck" 36th Infantry Division boarded landing craft and followed an intense naval bombardment toward their landing zones. All except the 142nd RCT, which waited to follow the initial landings at Green and Blue beaches with an assault on Camel Red. Recognizing the importance of the Frejus area, the Germans had deployed strong coastal defenses, which were hardly affected by the naval bombardment. Realizing that the enemy defenses were still intact after the bombardment lifted, and unable to contact General Dahlquist commanding the 36th, Admiral Lewis ordered the assault canceled with the leading waves only 3,000 yards from shore. Instead the 142nd was landed at Green Beach. Admiral Lewis was severely criticized for his decision and the delay it caused in securing the beachhead. This scenario gives you the chance to try your luck against the German defenses at "CAMEL RED"! Design Note: Special thanks to JW Johnson, you are sorely missed. "Give them hell Jay!"
