Artillery and no ammo

I often have an artillery piece that cannot fire on a turn because of a lack of ammunition, despite the fact that a HQ unit is within a couple of hexes?

Is there something I can do to amend this situation or prevent it from happening?

When this happens to off-map artillery, is it because I am using them too much?

As opposed to other units, artillery draws it's supply only from the base ammo level set in the header of the scenario file. There is nothing player can do to help artillery getting supplied. The Arty HQ units might as well be not be on the board.

How do I go about finding out how much ammunition is available to my artillery units?

I can see where it could be important. There have been times when I just fired away early in a game when I should have saved my ammunition for later in the scenario.

I've never been in the scenerio editor before.

Scenario editor?

Click on a hex and press 'u' to see the base ammo level in-game.
